Countrypolitan – stinging nettle cocktail

Hand holding nettle cocktail garnished with fresh stinging nettlesPin

This is a refreshing cocktail, with a unique flavor. The citrusy notes from the lime vodka and orange liqueur balance the earthy and slightly bitter notes from the stinging nettle.

We love the interplay of mixology and herbalism, that has been growing the last few years. In creating this delicious and refreshing concoction, we were inspired by our love for herbalism and the world’s classic cocktail – the Cosmopolitan.

We looked at the key components of the famous cosmopolitan cocktail and replaced the sweet cranberry juice with our Stinging nettle infusion. We love the nettle because it grows everywhere and because it is packed with nutrients. We named this stinging nettle cocktail the Countrypolitan because the nettle is typically foraged in the countryside. Additionally, the nettle infusion gives it a cool green color, which is also very much like the countryside.

Ingredients for the stinging nettle cocktail

  • Nettle infusion, which you can make in advance, either from dried or fresh nettle.
  • Lime-flavored vodka, we use the Absolut brand but feel free to replace it with your preferred vodka. If you cannot find it, you can also replace one ounce of the nettle infusion with fresh lime juice.
  • Cointreau is our favorite orange liqueur to use as a cocktail mixer, but you can replace it with any quality orange liqueur, such as Tripple Sec or Grand Marnier.
  • Ice cubes, add a few ice cubes in the mixer to cool down the liquids before pouring them in a martini glass.

Health benefits of stinging nettle

Talking about the health benefits of an alcoholic drink might be a bit controversial, but nettle itself is undeniably nourishing. Its leaves are packed with fiber, minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants. With anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties, nettle has long been valued in both kitchens and herbal medicine cabinets. You can read more about its health benefits here. here.
