Hemp seed dressing

This hemp seed dressing is creamy, cheesy, flavourful, and packed with nutrients. It comes together in under 5 minutes, no need to soak the seeds in advance.

The combination of hemp seeds, nutritional yeast, lemon juice, and dill creates a dressing that is both delicious and healthy. Hemp seeds are a source of plant-based protein and omega-3 fatty acids, while nutritional yeast adds a boost of B vitamins.

The dressing packs a surprisingly complex flavor given its simple ingredient list. It’s light, cheesy undertones evoke a subtle nod to classic ranch dressing, while the bright and refreshiing notes of dill offer a refreshing counterpoint.

The hemp seeds give it a creamy texture that is very satisfying.

This hemp seed dressing is super easy to make, as there is no need to soak the seeds, you just throw all ingredients in a blender, blend, and you are done!

We love it on salads, including pasta salads and roasted veggies. It’s also a great dipping sauce and pairs really well with our Swiss chard patties.

What are hemp seeds

Hemp seeds, also called hemp hearts, come from the Cannabis sativa plant, but don’t worry, they contain virtually no THC (the psychoactive compound in marijuana). They’re small, oval-shaped seeds with a slightly nutty flavor. They are one of the most popular healthy foods, also called a nutrient-power house, due to their impressive nutritional profile.

  • Complete protein: they provide all nine essential amino acids required by the human body. This makes them an excellent protein option for individuals following plant-based diets and plant-forward diets.
  • Healthy fats: rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which are essential for heart health and brain function.
  • Fiber: promotes digestive health and helps you feel full.
  • Vitamins and minerals: Packed with essential nutrients like magnesium, zinc, and iron.

Ingredients list

  • Hemp seeds are the star of this recipe, so try to get a good quality, and if possible organic.
  • Nutritional yeast will give the dressing a cheesy flavour that is similar to ranch.
  • Fresh lemon juice will provide citrusy freshness and a lovely contrast to the nutty flavor of the seeds, and the cheesy flavor of the nutritional yeast.
  • Fresh dill is another way to add freshness to the dressing. You can replace it fresh parsley.
  • Seasonings, such as sea salt, powdered onion and garlic will help to marry the flavours.
  • Water is needed to get to the desired texture and creaminess of the dressing.

Serving and storage

This hemp seed dressing will keep in the fridge, in an airtight container (like a mason jar) for up to five days.

Use this hemp seed dressing in veggie salads, pasta salads, and roasted veggies such as broccoli, sweet potato, or cauliflower. It is also great as a dipping sauce for veggie patties, or tortilla chips.

Why you’ll love it

  • Low effort and quick to make, as there is no need to pre-soak the nuts.
  • Creamy – hemp seeds are full of healthy fats that emulsify when blended with other ingredients, creating a smooth and velvety consistency.
  • Incredibly nutritious because hemp seeds are the main ingredients.
  • Healthier than any store-bought dressing or dipping sauce.
  • Versatile – it’s fantastic in fresh or warm salads, Buddha bowls, wraps, sandwiches, and burgers.
  • Stays good in the fridge for up to five days.
  • A great choice if you are seeking plant-based, oil-free, or nut-free dressings and dips.
