Ingredients

  • Blueberries – Both fresh and frozen blueberries work, we tend to use frozen ones because they are more affordable. Blueberries are incredibly healthy and can contribute to heart disease, brain health, and blood sugar levels. Buy organic blueberries, especially in the US. Blueberries are on the Dirty Dozen list, which means that they contain several toxic pesticides.
  • Avocado – Any type of avocado works perfectly for this recipe. To check if your avocado is ripe, remove the small stem at the top. If the area underneath is green, the avocado is likely perfectly ripe and ready to use. If it’s brown or dark, the avocado is likely overripe or spoiled.
  • Baby spinach – While packed with vitamins and minerals, spinach is also on the dirty dozen list (linked above). We use fresh biological baby spinach.
  • Banana – A ripe banana will add sweetness to the smoothie, so you won’t have to add sweetener. Frozen bananas are fine. If you have a few very ripe bananas, you can slice them and freeze them – these will be perfect for smoothies.
  • Water (and ice) – Add water to make it liquid, in the summer you may want to add ice as well. Avocados can make the smoothie consistency pretty thick, so if you have a large avocado, you may add extra water (or less avocado).

Ingredient replacement

  • Add protein – Vanilla or unflavored options work best—I love using pea protein, but even unflavored powders can subtly enhance the taste, which I balance out by adding a teaspoon of maple syrup.
  • Make it sweeter – If the natural sweetness from the banana isn’t enough, add a teaspoon of agave nectar, or maple syrup.
  • Add superfood powders – Take your smoothie to the next level by incorporating superfood powders like lucuma, spirulina, maca, or ashwagandha. Each offers unique health benefits, from boosting energy to supporting hormonal balance.
  • Add seeds – Sprinkle in seeds like chia, flax, or pumpkin seeds for added fiber and nutrition. They can also support hormonal balance, making this smoothie a great option for those practicing seed cycling.
